Two presentations were made in the session. Second year PhD student Kevin Roy Serrona, from the Department of Science, Technology and Environment of the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, exposed advances in his dissertation "Urban Landfill Planning and Social Participation in Metro Manila: Resource Recovery, Options and Challenges". By his side, Mr. Samata, second year master student from the Faculty of International Law, enlightened the group over the chapter 7 of the UN Charter and actions of the Security Council.
In Kevin's words:
"Increasing volume of municipal solid waste (MSW) is one of the pressing environmental problems in Metro Manila. The need to establish aesthetically and community acceptable disposal facilities are important in urban areas. An equally important dimension is the need to address the situation of wastepickers and small junkshops who rely from waste recovery in dumpsites to earn a living. Urban landfill planning is not just about the disposal facility itself but also about ensuring environmental and social security for marginalized people. Likewise, it is necessary to look at the different waste management options in the context of the Philippines."
